I got a 30 pound Smallmouth Buffalo fishing a ned rig for smallmouth.

I’ve been hooking some gar lately on a new river, but they keep coming off after about 5 seconds. It’s stays on for a few head shakes but never enough to land. Any tips on keeping these hooked? I’m assume it has to do with the bony mouth.
Looks fun.
Caught a nice drum on a chatterbait last week! It was a nice surprise. I’ll take em all day given how my bass numbers have been .

While targeting bass, I’ve also caught black crappie, yellow perch, various catfishes and trouts, and numerous hungry frogs. Last time I went out, I had a redtail hawk swoop at a topwater frog.
