I’m finally buying my first personal fly setup after a bunch of guided trips (Rockies + Midwest). Pictures to prove I am a real human. When I travel I mostly chase small, backcountry streams; at home I’m stuck with ponds/lakes (stillwater) for bass. I’ll also do some drift-boat days in the Ozarks.
I like nice gear and would prefer to buy once/cry once rather than upgrade later. I’m looking at high-end rods and trying to pick one rod to cover as much of this as possible. Current short list is 9’ or 10’ in a 5-wt or 6-wt.
I’d love the community’s take on the best “do-most-things” setup:
• Rod length/weight: For small creeks + stillwater bass + occasional drift boat… would you go 9’ 5-wt, 9’ 6-wt, 10’ 5-wt, or 10’ 6-wt? Why?
• Action: Fast vs medium-fast for this use case? I do like crisp, accurate rods but don’t want to make small-stream dries miserable.
• Reel: What size/weight balances your recommended rod well? Any must-have drag/features for warm-water bass and the odd streamer day?
• Lines: If I can only start with one, which floating line would you pick (WF vs DT, half-size heavy, etc.)? Would you add a sink tip or an intermediate for stillwater bass as a second spool?
• Leaders/tippet: Any “set-and-forget” leader setup that works across dries/nymphs/small streamers without constant rebuilds?
• Brands/models you’d pick at the higher end are welcome (I’ve been eyeing Orvis/Sage/Scott, etc.), but I’m most interested in why your choice fits the mix above.
Constraints/preferences:
• I value accuracy and feel on small water, but I still need enough backbone for small streamers and bass bugs on lakes.
• I’d rather carry one rod + maybe a second spool than a whole quiver.
Thanks in advance—would love to hear what’s worked for you, especially if you fish a similar mix of small creeks, Ozark floats, and stillwater bass.
TL;DR: Want a high-end, one-rod quiver for small streams + Ozark drifts + local stillwater bass. Debating 9’ vs 10’ and 5-wt vs 6-wt; looking for rod/reel/line recommendations and rationale.

9’ Douglas Sky-G 5wt. I’m in an identical situation to you. Ozarks…. Some trips out west… but home is a bass pond. You won’t regret it. Awesome rod
