I keep hearing fall is a great time for jerkbaits since bass are feeding aggressively on baitfish however for the life of me I can’t figure out how to work them. The majority of my successes come from straight slow retrieves however whenever I try to incorporate any sort of jerk into the retrieve I feel like it all comes apart. I usually try to follow the reel alittle, jerk, jerk, pause method but I can never figure out how to keep tension on the line without pretty much just dragging my lure since i predominantly fish rivers with currents. Any tips/ advice would be appreciated!

Random picture of fish as a thanks in advance for reading rant and any tips haha
