So my dad brought home this betta from PetSmart, it’s an alien betta. We have lots of tanks but none are suitable for him. I have a tank in my room that’s like a 36-40 gallon hexagonal tank. It currently only has 1 danio (he was with a sick batch and the only survivor) and it’s heated but it’s very very tall and I know bettas don’t generally like tall tanks. But the only other options are to 1. Keep him in the cup until my dad decides what to do which could be like a week or days, or 2. I set up a tank for him but it would be uncycled as we don’t have any extra filters we could take out of already running tanks and I’ve never done a fish in cycle before. I’ve been putting heated water from some of our tanks into the cup periodically I’m just really stressed about this fish.

I have my own male betta and I know how to take care of them in general, but I’ve never been in a situation where I didn’t have a tank I could set up or one already set up. Please help 🙏

He would be much happier in that tall hex tank than in the cup until he gets his own betta-specific tank. You’ll only be stressing him out by keeping him in a super confined space and constantly changing the water in it. Yes they prefer wide over tall but that would be a 100% upgrade versus the cup right now.

Just put him in your tank.

A tank is a tank. Space is space and Id id guarantee hell be happier than you know in there.

  3. I would say the large tank with resting spots near the surface. He is so lucky to have found you.

  4. Yeah your big tank for now.

A fish in cycle is not as hard as most make it out to be. If you want to set up a new tank for him. And you have starter BB is you expiating filters to jump start the process. Daily water checks and changes if needed.

Alien bettas are generally healthier and better swimmers especially if he’s younger but adding some resting points and creating tiers or levels in the tank might be sick

  6. My short finned female would have no problem in the big tank. She’s quick and swims constantly. He’ll be so much better off in the big tank than a cup. Give him some resting spots and make sure you have a bubbler and he’ll be fine.

  7. go with the tall tank for now until you procure an appropriate tank. Make sure to provide lots of resting space near the surface where you can. Floating hides, plants etc. Purchase an extra sponge filter and put it in the tank with him, to start collecting beneficial bacteria from your established tank that you can move over with him.
