So I stumbled on a Penn III Slammer 10500 for $100 on Facebook Marketplace last week. Seller only had one photo of the reel, which made me kinda suspicious of if it was actaully a 10500. There were no markings or anything of that nature on it that were legible in the photo.
Went to check it out in person, and was like dang this thing is pretty hefty. The spin feels smooth for the most part, but there’s this weird metal on met light metal on metal scraping sound when the oscillating rotor cover goes down to the bottom, also the bail doesn’t lock down. But honestly? Not a dealbreaker for a project reel.
Spent the week sourcing parts and came across the website mysticparts, which seems to have mainly everything i need to get it all sorted out. The real question is Was this a smart buy?
I’ve got some solid fishing gear already such as the:
Penn S.V. Silverado 6000 (my go-to for off the rocks fishing and inland fishing)
Penn 330GTi (what i use for bottom fishing and sometimes trolling).
Shimano Spheros SW8000HG (for my light to mid fishing mainly catching white water snappers and yellow tail snapper sometimes)
But nothing heavy enough for Wahoo or Tuna etc. This Penn III is my shot at that. For $100 + parts? I’d say maybe worth it but it is definetly a project.
But I’d like your take do you think it was worth paying 100 for it ? Should i have walked away or haggled a bit ? Have you owned one or something similar and how did it hold up for you ?
