I had tanks for decades, and multiple bettas over the years. I never really even knew anything about plakats and never considered one, until recently when I started looking into a local place that sells hundreds of higher dollar bettas and started looking at giants. I got this guy, and giant plakat…and he’s a completely different fish than the bettas I had before. He’s like a normal betta on crack, constantly in motion, constantly up to something, fast, curious movement all the time. Way more interesting than the slower long finned bettas I’ve had before. Just way more athletic with the short fins and swims the way a betta apparently should swim. This one is also stunning with all the colors. Pics don’t do him justice…but suffice to say, I think plakats, giants in particular, are by far my favorites. Much more interesting.

I wouldn’t get anything besides a plakat, they have so much more energy and are less likely to injure their fins

Agreed. I have eight bettas, seven are plakats, including a giant. They’re definitely my favorite!
I just got my first plakat too after only longer finned bettas and I have noticed the same things. My boy is SO friendly, happy, and alwaysss on the move. I absolutely adore him! I still love the beautiful long finned ones, but I never truly appreciated plakats enough!! They are just as pretty and have an explosion of personality! This is my boy Tony, I just got him a couple weeks ago. These are his color progression pics from days 1, 5, & 10. Absolutely love the big personality my little guy has!🥰

I never used to like plakats. I thought they were boring and the longer finned bettas were so much prettier.
Now I’m basically the opposite where I think the plakats are prettier and look way more in proportion, have more interesting patterns, and far less likely to have torn or bitten fins.
After seeing my long finned bettas bite their tails off and how much easier my plakats can swim, I’m now at the position where I view plakats as simply way more ethical.
