Betta Fish: So this is how our morning is going

So yesterday I moved the breeding dome for my ghost shrimp, and this morning, "Fishy" (as named by my 2 year old) didn't come up for his food…and this is where I found him.

Before I take him out, any tips on how to do it a little more safely? I'm worried about him thrashing in the hole. This thing has no sharp edges, but I'm worried he could damage his spine…and my kid loves this fish.
