I’ve had Phish for two weeks now, and feel like I rescued him from a big box store. He’s in a fully cycled, planted tank. He was initially pale and orange, and while the blue is coming in I fear the dark face and head may be spreading since I brought him home.
His little fin was already curled, and this hasn’t gotten worse.

And pardon:
10 gallon tank, with two snails
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 10
PH: 8
He seems to be happy and is very curious. Spends his days staring at me while I work, and demands food anytime I move. No sense for boundaries or personal space, swims between my hand when trying to clean the tank. Other than this, he seems to be doing well.
I’m not an expert on betta fish colourations, but he looks to me like some kind of grizzle betta, and the darkening on his face is probably completely natural 🙂
Bettas tend to brighten up and show off their darker, richer colours when in an appropriate environment. If he’s acting normal and eating well, it’s most likely that his colours are just starting to show off now that he’s happy.

I’ve got a boy that is similar to this guy. i got him in February and his black spots don’t bother him! i think it might just be an odd coloration.
