Like the title says, my son won a goldfish at a carnival, after convincing my wife he couldn't live in a bowl, we had to do an emergency late night Walmart run to get a 20 gallonkit, substrate, distilled water etc.
Last night: for substrate we mixed sand and gravel under another gravel layer to make planting easier. I pulled a gallon of water out of our established planted axolotl tank to try and kickstart the cycle, filled the rest with distilled since I was out of RO. Deposited fish, now named Archie, short for archaeopteryx.
Today: took a run to our local aquarium supply store for plants, purchased a bacteria kickstarter kit. The plants apparently also had some nerites and a ghost shrimp attached as they're in the tank now. He hasn't been fed yet, planning on feeding tonight
I haven't done a full test yet but the strip tests all come back neutral.
Is there anything else I should be doing right now? I've always had time to establish tanks before so not sure what I need to look out for right now.
Thanks in advance from Archie đ

Hey so you should totally follow a ‘fish in’ cycling guide. This means daily water changes

Later on you will need to upgrade to a 40 gallon as these fish poop a lot
It looks like he has some sort of finrot too
