When I saw this fish in the water, it was the more traditional plain, golden brown that you envision when you envision smallmouth. When I caught this fish, it flared its patterning along with switching its pigment to greenish rather than brown. One of the most dramatic quick color changes ive observed with fish. Caught on a size 12 hook with half a redworm under a single splitshot (Small rig I know, I was targeting minnows). Weather was sunny, about 11am at 75 degrees.
