I won this fish at bingo at my school and had NO IDEA What I was getting into, but I have been doing my research on how to care for a male veiltail betta fish. Is my fish healthy? I have already ordered a bigger tank which is currently cycling (you can see it in the background). The tank is 5.5gallons and I have bought silk plants for the tank, I plan to get real ones later. I have a heater and sponge filter on the way!

(NOTICE—I have named my fish BOWSER JR and I hate to have him in the tiny tank he’s in now, but I just thought it’d be better to transfer him out of the dirty tiny container he came in.)

Any Beginner Tips would be very much appreciated appreciated!!!

  1. Put him in the bigger tank while it cycles. It is better to be in a larger uncycled tank where his waste will be more diluted.

The tank will take a while to cycle, after you get it. Since it’s an emergency situation I’d definitely recommend looking into some nitrifying bacteria products to speed that up. In the meantime, go to the closest pet store, get some water treatment, follow the instructions and get some more water in there. Walmart probably has it, if there’s none near by. Good job doing your research, and taking steps to rescue this guy. Good luck.

Put him into the bigger tank ASAP, even if it’s cycling. Far better to live in there than a tiny tub where he’ll be swimming in his own waste.

Quite irresponsible for your school to be offering a betta as a prize for winning bingo, but at least you seem to want to properly care for it and give it what it needs, so I’m glad it ended up with you!

I’d also get some real plants ASAP – they help with the cycling. There are plenty of beginner friendly aquarium plants out there for pretty cheap

  4. You are a caring owner and you’re doing great. What I’m concerned about is the 11 other fish.
