What am I doing wrong?? I have a lid!! THAT IS THE ONLY GAP 😠My new betta I bought today found this within 5 HOURS!! Jumped out and died 💔
After each time, I’ve tested the water, and it’s always been 0, 0, 0-10ppm. All my other fish are fine (cpd + endler).
Fish 1:
– Special wild type imbellis import from Thailand…
💔💸
– Medium planted tank
– Had for ~1 month
– grandma overfed while I was away for 1 week, but he jumped 3-7 days after this from memory, after extensive cleaning / water changes
Fish 2 (passed around 5mo ago)
– Dumbo betta, medium fins
– Heavily planted tank
– Had for nearly a year before jumping randomly one day
Fish 3 (today, second photo is actually of him from the sale ad 🥹)
– Blue buttery halfmoon
– Acclimatized and bought TODAY
– Been in tank less than 5 hours, jumped and died
– Sparsely planted atm, just re-scaped, waiting for growth
– Mature tank established for ~2 years
I would say I’m a very experienced fish keeper, with 6 planted tanks, everyone else is doing great…bettas just hate me ðŸ˜ðŸ’”

Why did you not put something over that hole after the first one jumped?
Imbellis can jump up to 8 inches or more, you’ll need to have every single gap closed up,
They are little missile launchers. Lowering the water isn’t enough.
EDIT: I should add that all bettas are known jumpers and they jump for tons of reasons not just water quality. They might be hoping to land in a different spot with females, or more food, it could be anything.
it honestly sounds like you just have terrible luck op, im so sorry. i’d get some mesh to cover the tiny gaps because unfortunately bettas are just jumpers, they do it on instinct. having a good canopy of floating plants can also help a ton. best of luck, they really are Just Like That(tm)
Lots of floating plant cover! They like to feel hidden and secure as they can startle really easily. I think it’s mostly just bad luck. I have a significantly larger gap on mine for my HOB filter and mine hasn’t jumped.
The water level is quite high which will make it easier for them to jump out. I can’t tell if there’s much of a gap between the water and the lid for the betta to breathe at the surface, I also think that the lack of gap could be preventing surface agitation which helps to oxygenate the water, I might be wrong though. Also your water level might not be this high all the time so this might not be relevant anyway!
Floating plants can help as cover to stop your betta from jumping out
By watching the posts on this reddit about their betta jumpers I have learned before even starting that all gaps need closed. So now I seal my tanks like fort knox with only a few spots for tubes and one for the HOB. Sorry for your losses. 😞
Please educate yourself on fish before you get them. Your water level is way too high. Bettas are labyrinth fish – they utilize both gills and lungs. They need access to air at the top of your tank. Drop your water level by 3 inches.
Mine jumped out and was out like an hour. I stuck his ass back in the water hoping he’d live and he did come
Back to after being super disoriented. He’s been solid for a month now.
I have that same tank, and my first betta jumped out of that gap after 5 months and broke my heart. I keep it covered 100% of the time and have a lot of floaters to prevent my boy Bettasaurus from jumping too

Water level is too high, they need to have a buffer of air to “breathe “
