I have a medium heavy Penn something 10 ft and a ugly stick bigwater 12 ft, and they both have huge reels. This is because when I started out I thought I would want to catch a shark. But I've tried before with the big rods and 1. I've never caught anything, and I can't use them to catch smaller fish and 2. They are always a hassle to carry and deal with even when they are broken down

But over 2 years I have discovered I enjoy catching smaller fish much more. I brought a bass rod out when I had the big rods out and I caught many whiting, some catfish and puffers, and 2 baby sharks (1 was a ft and a half bonnethead and it fought like a CHAMP. It was the most fun fight I've ever had on the surf). A pompano is on my bucket list!

That being said, it is sometimes hard to tell when I get a bite, especially if the bass rod is in the rod holder, it's hard to distinguish waves from bites. But in YouTube videos I watch their rods always go crazy when they get a bite, and they have these skinny but long rods.

So I want to sell one of my big rods (probably the ten foot) and buy a lighter rod. What do you guys think about this? Is it worth the hassle? I have discovered I love ultralight fishing so maybe that is why I love fishing lighter more. I will get more use out of it and enjoy it more.

I'm thinking I should keep a big rod and throw it out while I have the other one's out just on the off chance I catch a shark. Next time I go fishing I'm going to try to switch up the shark bait I use. Maybe try and get my hands on some stingray? Or just big mullet.

TL:DR Don't like big rod, like using lighter rod more for smaller fish. Should I sell a big rod to buy a lighter rod?

  1. I have a medium 10ft shamano speedmaster paired with a 5000 penn reel. Might be close to what you’re looking for it’s definitely skinnier than these rods. 3/4-4 oz lure rating so it’s good for lures and small bait rigs.
