I've been looking for more ways to determine the sex of betta fish, since there are many exceptions for most ways (males can have a false egg spot, for example).

I've noticed that females tend to be chonkier than males, for lack of a better term. The weight chart that is often posted seems to be applicable to only males.

I've observed a consistent difference in body composition between my males and females.
Only four are pictured below, but I've had five males and three females and all of them showed this pattern.

On females, the body is the widest point on the betta.
On males, the head is widest, while the body slims out.

Thoughts?
(1st pic is Dianthus, female. 2nd Gus, male. 3rd Sweetpea, male, a little bit underweight. 4th, Bugbugs, female)

There’s a few ways to tell, ofc there’s exceptions to all so you just look at every option and see how many match. Main ones are egg spot/lack of, body shape, ventral fin length, rest of the fin length, if there’s a beard or not, and if the betta is lightly coloured enough sometimes you can see their ovaries through their skin
