My plan is a betta, a small school of Pygmy corydoras, and a couple snails!

  1. Please just keep a betta with snails or shrimp. Bettas that are kept with other fish need 20 gallons minimum

  2. I have the same one but I replaced the heater with something smaller, I didn’t like how big the one that came with it was.

  3. Good for you- you got a nice heater, hang on filter and an easier to maintain environment for your little ones! Definitely don’t feel bad, just let your dad know how much you appreciate his interest in your hobby!

I have that ten gallon kit and it was my first tank.

I think the HOB is fine I just put my own filter media in it, not that plastic blue thing

Then I bought a sheet of polycarbonate, like Home Depot Lowe’s or Amazon, jig sawed it to fit, then any Amazon hygger type light is a huge upgrade

I also jigged a feeding hole, hob cut out etc so I don’t have to take it off besides water change. Looks like this now

I have the blue betta shrimps and snails. Prob would be fine for a few guppies but betta would be simplest

I’d skip corydoras because they like packs of 5 or 6 or so plus not getting along with betta

I have corydoras only in my 20 long and 29, I feel like they’d be cramped in less

If u want multi fish get guppies and skip betta. Single sex is great all males because they look cooler, or male and female 2 or 3 to 1 ratio if you have a fish store to drop extras off because they reproduce quickly

And I’d recomend getting a Val plant. It’s easy and basically requires no effort or ability (like how I like my tanks lol). And it will fill the thing in no time, good for eating the nitrates aka waste
