Hi all, I’ve been dry fly fishing for a little while now and typically use a 5wt 8’6 rod that was gifted to me. I just tried out indicator nymphing a few weeks ago and love it! Had a great time and would love some recommendations on rod and reels that would be a little more accommodating to indicator nymphing rigs. I’m looking to spend around 500 for both rod and reel. I also would like to try streamers at some point and would love some pointers on gear and anything related. Let me know what works for you!

Honestly you don’t need a separate rig for nymphs vs dries, and only need one for streamers if you want to chuck big ones.

    A 9’ 5wt does all that, a 9’ 6wt does streamers a little better and dries a little worse.

Redington classic trout, your choice of reel, and send it.

  2. Contrary to every bit of industry marketing, you don’t actually need super specialized gear to do most things in the flyfishing world, and skills trump gear 10 times out of 10. You might enjoy having a longer rod to indicator nymph, but I wouldn’t hesitate to use an 8’6” 5 any day of the week. I use everything from an 8’ 3 wt to a 9’6” 5 to a 9’ 7.

    My main deciding factor? Wind.

And I use the exact same rods for dries and streamers, too. Again, wind and what I feel like throwing that day.

  3. I use the same rods for everything I throw. The rod and fly sizes change depending on the species in targeting.
