He’s had a swollen belly for a long time. Maybe a month. I’ve fasted, I have done water changes. Idk what is wrong with him. He swims and eats normal. Just his belly is HUGE, and I feel like it’s getting worse

  1. Tank size is 6 gallon, filtered and heated, I don’t have parameters but I do frequent water changes & only use sea chem (pristine and prime, and occasionally ammonia), water changes are weekly, scooping about half water out replace with fresh and monthly I do a full clean with the gravel vac, no tank mates, planted with live plants only

  2. The mushy looking fins look like fin rot, not sure if that helps but if water parameters are causing fin rot it could be related to the bloating. Do you test your water? If you don’t have a test kit you can put some water in a plastic sandwich bag (less likely of cross contamination) and I believe petco will test it for you. LFS is a better option if you have one

He’s probably constipated. You need to fast him for a few days and put him in a hospital tank with an Epsom salt bath. 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt per gallon. For a 10 minute soak. Epson salt should help with the constipation

  4. Looks like dropsy. If you catch it early you have a better chance of survival, because its almost always fatal. Typical of big box pet store siamese fighting fish/ betta. Had 4 in one year all developed it within less than a month, tank parameters were perfect, had to speak to a professional. I would advise to only buy from a good aquarium store, which you’ll know by their betta setup.

  5. Need a pic from above. Are any scales protruding?

When was the last time you fed them? What is your feeding routine? What frequency / any fast days? Has anyone else been feeding your fish?

It’s definitely bloat – now the cause is undetermined but your answers may help. Common culprits are overfeeding / constipation. Other likely diagnoses are parasites or internal organ failure.

If you see the scales protruding, you’ll need an EPSOM Salt bath. NOT Aquarium Salt. This DOES NOT GO IN YOUR MAIN TANK. The Epsom Salt should go into an Emergency (ER) Tank or a Quarantine (QR) tank .. whatever you call it.

Do you have any meds on hand? I see your a Seachem fan as well, do you have paraguard or metroplex?

ETA: it’s funny because my orange male betta reminded me of this because he’s guilty of it. He steals the snail wafers that sink to the bottom. He’ll wrestle them away from them lol.

Do you have a situation like that?
