I recently got a spinning rod for trout fishing and bought line marked as flurocarbon leader. I didn’t realize and I put it on my school. Is that still OK?

  1. Yeah it’s fine. It’s all the same stuff just marketed to sell you less for more. I have had the same spool of mono for leader line for like 6 years.

  2. I’d run braided mainline with a fluoro leader, 9 times out of 10 that’s going to be your best bet. Not much sense In spoiling the whole reel with fluoro aside from a few niche applications.

  3. Ditch the fluoro, which is all marker hype anyway (apart from sinking slightly faster) and go full mono or braid/mono leader.

  4. No, because they usually only come in ~25yd spools or something similar. That is not nearly enough to fill a reel.

The inverse – using regular “mainline” as leader – is totally fine. The only catch here is that they typically don’t make fluorocarbon mainline heavier than 25-30lb test, so if you need a heavier leader then you’re stuck buying the spools marketed as “leader” line (or using mono, which is arguably just as good as a leader material).

Flouro marketed as leader line is stiffer than regular mainline fluorocarbon. It won’t work at all, not to mention it would be expensive AF. You can use regular mainline fluorocarbon as a leader, though. It just won’t be quite as tough.

I tried running only fluoro to stop needing a leader, and it wouldn’t go as far and got tangled more. It felt so terrible that I cut 15 bucks of it off my reel and went back to braid.

  7. Fluorocarbon leader is stiffer so it may tend to want to jump off the spool; if you can make it work though, there is no reason to replace it.

Seguar does make a fluorocarbon mainline called Red Label. It’s more supple than fluorocarbon leader material, but I wouldn’t go over 8lb test with it, because it’s still pretty stiff.

4-6lb is the sweet spot for fluoro mainline, IME. It’s perfect for trout fishing.

  8. It will work fine in this case, there’s no difference between Seaguar spools for mainline and Seaguar spools for leader, just the amount on the spool. I believe the leader spools only have 100 yards on them, which may not be enough to completely fill your spool. If you have more than 1/8 of a lip left on the spool you’ll see casting performance start to drop off.
