I honestly don’t get the duckweed hate. Yeah it’s a bother if it overruns your tank, but that’s all on how much nutrients are available to the plants. It’s one of the best nutrient converting plants out there, that’s why it’s so prevalent in nature. And as an added bonus, you can make it into more pet food, higher in protein than most algae wafers and the like.
People are happily doing three water changes a week and gravel vacuuming once a week, but suddenly feel powerless when they also need to scoop out duckweed whenever it gets out of control. While it grows fast, it’s not like you need to keep collecting it multiple times a day.
