Hey everyone. I’m hoping y’all can give me a better idea of what I’m using, what I may or may not be doing wrong, and any other tips. I’m gonna try to make this as detailed as possible, so I apologize for the long post.

I have been fishing a two handed rod for a few years now. I picked one up back in high school and due to course scheduling, I was able to fish a good 45 days my first season on the Sauk and the Skagit River. Those rivers beat me down pretty good seeing as how I wasn’t the most familiar with casting, fly selection & variety, water selection, and various other reasons. Lost of frozen fingers and I never even got a whiff of a fish.

I ended up spending 2019 – 2024 in Virginia, which caused me to slow down on Spey fishing. I would occasionally swing for small mouth on the New river and I did pick up a 2 Wt. trout spey for the Jackson, South, and other larger rivers, but never used it as much as needed.

I have since moved to Southern Oregon and now have been swinging the Rogue River for a good 7-8 outings. I am familiar with the fact that I can’t expect fish every time I go out, but I’m not even catching pike minnow or small trout as a by product. Not even a “nibble”.

I’d love anyone’s advice on either Spey fishing in general or fishing the Rogue river, if you’re familiar. I will list some of the gear below that I’m working with & tactics I’ve used.

Rod(s): Cabela’s Vector 7wt – 12’6 & Loop Xact 7wt – 13’0 (I use the Vector mainly)
Reel: Redington Behemoth 9/10
Line: Rio Skagit Max 475g Shooting head & Scandi – – Head (unknown name) 450g
– A poly coated shooting line (unsure where I got it)
– 30-40lb backing
Leaders: 10 ft. – float, 2-3ips, 8ips | 6ft. – 2-3ips
Tippet: 3-5 Ft. 16 lb

I have yet to fish the Scandi head in Oregon. It’s solely been the Skagit head and I change weighted leaders depending on the water I’m fishing. Floating for runs, 2-3ips for riffles and 8ips for pools or water deeper than about 7-8 feet deep. I’ve fished sections of the river ranging from big bends (150+ ft across), 15+ ft deep pools that I can cast across, pocket water behind rock outcroppings, etc.

I lost track of my swung fly box throughout my time in VA, so I really only have the flies pictures above. I plan on picking up / tying some heavier stuff for winter time.

Can anyone tell me whether there is anything I need to change, whether it’s flies, leaders, rod, etc.? Any tips specific to the Rogue river. Seriously any advice at all would be appreciated! If you even want to toss in general advice for someone who might find this thread in the future, I’m definitely not above it. Thanks!

Honestly, go to a local fly shop and shoot the breeze with them. Buy a couple flies as a thank you and go fish!
