I've been seeing people use this type of reel. It looks like a fly reel but it has a gearbox at the side. Seems to be a Japanese type reel. Anyone knows what type of reel this is?

I saw a ton of these on a Japanese website the other day. I didn’t dive into it but I think you are right in saying they are Japanese.

  2. Its hard to tell the size from the picture, but if it’s small(ish), it would be great for ice fishing.
Do you have a link to where to get one?

  3. While not sure on that reel itself, I have many reels just like it for ice fishing. They are inline reels that we use for lighter lures, there is no line twist and line memory is minimal on these reels due to the large diameter spool.

They are good to use for bluegill, crappie, and perch on ice.
