Hi,

On the left I have a standard size 2.5 grams Japanese made Yarie spoon that I use with great success. The right one is Yarie First star and I got 20 of them for my birthday from a friend. Can you tell me if they are good for normal size trout or more about them in general. I tried casting them a few times and they cast 4 times more than the normal spoons but the bigger size and weight (10 grams) is too much in my opinion. Since I’ve got so much of the can I use them for other species as well?

Thanks

  1. It’s fine, I would say the bigger one is better for larger bodies of water and will be for targeting bigger trout. I use a 30g spoon for catching trout in lakes and it works well.

  2. Those look like they’d slay the trout in the lakes i fish- northern CA. You could cast them, but a slow troll behind a flasher would really be the ticket. You want a ~3-6″ flasher and the leader beteen the flasher and the spoon doesnt need to be very long. 2 feet is fine. But every body of water is different. As for the size, we say big bait catches big fish. If you want the best chance of catching ANY sized trout, smaller is gonna be better, but if you want to catch keepers, bigger is better. Also, check your regulations in your area, see if you can use treble hooks. I have found that simple spoons like those wiggle and dance better with a single J-hook, but I get more fish to the boat with a treble. Most trout lakes trebles are fine, but if there’s Kokanee or some other more protected species, there may be regs that state the use of single hooks is required.

    Tight lines!
