Hello all, I was gifted this Betta Fish (Gerald) and the set up 2 weeks ago for my birthday. I know the tank is too small (2.5 Gallon) and the set up is sad, I'll be updating all of that after the holidays pass.
I did my first water change 5 days ago. The water looked to be getting dirty so I changed 50% of it and hoped it would help the situation. Well, the cloudiness hasn't settled. The plants are planted straight into bioactive sand, the girl didn't realize you need to plant plants in… dirt. I've left them in there but they have lots of brown spots on them so I know they're dying. Could that be causing the cloudiness or something else?
I have no idea how to care for a Betta and all the research I've done has been conflicting. So I thought coming here to ppl that have real life experience would be a good start. Thanks for all the advice in advance!

Have you gotten a test kit to test water parameters?
Get an api master kit and look into fish in cycling/ the nitrogen cycle.
