Hello, this is my first post on reddit and on here. I was wondering if any of yall could help me with identifying the gender, breed, and visual health of my betta fish. My girlfriend and I bought him from PetsMart around 2 weeks ago and he was labeled as a Male Samurai, he was very small and has been growing. First, we had him in a 5 gallon but it was cracked at the top and to upgrade to a 10 gallon and a heater it was only $10 so we moved him. We are trying to perform a fish-in cycle, we already tried introducing 3 cherry shrimp but they ended up as gourmet dinner (we knew about the risk). But just curious if anyone could help with the identification of all of that as we were worried about what looked like fin rot to a new-comer, looks more like crown-tail now. I’ll post more photos in comments, if you have suggestions for ways to take some better ones lmk. Please and thank you all.

Black orchid crowntail, male, visually healthy and active. Relatively young according to the shininess of his scales and overall size.

Samurais or Mambas are Black with White/Metallic gray, or alternatively red samurais are red with white/metallic gray.

Crowntails are expected to experience dreading/ light curling of their tails with age, it happens regardless of health and care.
