So I have pretty koi female that I've had for a few months now. Over the last couple weeks I've noticed she's lost several scales and seems to have lost some color as well. She swam around happily and had a good appetite so I assumed she scraped them off on a plant or her pineapple house. I did a 50% water change 4 days ago, and up until yesterday she seemed perfectly fine. Swimming, eating, always curious when someone was by her tank. Now she's gotten lethargic, laying on her side occasionally, and hanging vertically in the plants. She hasn't eaten since then either. Naturally I'm concerned. I did another half water change. Tank is currently 76 degrees F. But when I was doing the water change, I noticed the tank filter is very loud. Like vibrates the whole tank loud. So I've removed it for now. I'm wondering, could continuous loud vibrations from the filter have something to do with it?

  1. u should remove the fake plants an pineapple its gonna harm her delicate fins an body, theres literally a r/deathpineapple

  2. I’d be more concerned about changing the pineapple house, fake plants and painted gravel for real plants natural gravel. But yes a quiet filter is always recommended.

  3. The pineapple has been known to kill bettas. From what was said in here it sounds like toxic paint or something on the pineapple. Also loud noises are multiplied by water and tank. I would change the filter to a sponge filter.

So i noticed you said you did a 50% water change and during that you noticed the filter was loud/vibrating- this is probably because you did such a significant water change with the filter on. The motor has to work harder the lower the water level is, and if it gets too low it can even damage the filter. There is usually a minimum water level line on the filter, but personally I unplug the filter whenever I’m doing a water change. And when you turn it back on, it helps to have a cup of tank water to pour directly into the filter’s basin.

This is in addition to what others have said; the painted rock substrate and decorations will inevitably be slowly leeching toxins into the water. It’s absolutely best to get real substrate and plants, and for decoration use rock and wood from an aquarium store. It can be hard to make this setup in an existing tank; check Facebook marketplace for at LEAST a 5 gallon tank and start from scratch.

Please feel free to respond with any further questions you might have. I want to help you help your betta.

Might want to take them out in that case

Silk plants and natural-looking decor without sharp edges would be a much safer option 👍
