I got her last night and I was like “wow I’ve never seen a betta with stripes before how cool” and then googled it after I bought her that they get stress stripes 🥲 is this just her breeding or are they stress? How can I fix this?

  1. I think stress stripe. If you just got her last night, as long as your water parameters are good and she’s got cover from plants and whatnot in the tank, it should go away on its own as she gets more comfortable.

It’s normal for a new fish to be stressed.

Pet stores are a stressful environment even if they house the fish properly. All the people and other animals coming and going along with the sight of other bettas can easily lead to stress. Most pet stores don’t house bettas well, and being in those tiny cups makes things even more stressful.

Moving to a new tank is a big change so she is probably still stressed. If they are stress stripes they will most likely fade as she settles in.

  3. Ive had a crowntail for a few weeks now, and she still has that ‘stress stripe’ I think although yours may be stress stripes now, these crowntail young females just have this pattern, my girl is definitely not stressed in a 20 gal long planted tank. She eats and explores just fine.

I have a betta that gets stressed over the littlest thing. Water change? Stripe. Take out a plant? Stripe. Add some shrimp in? Stripe. She calms down though.
