I recently put 6 lb fluorocarbon on a new combo I was gifted, and I’ve been struggling with the line jumping off the spool. At first it was bad — whole coils were flying off — and after retrying and cutting off line to try again with fresh line, I finally got it to where only the first couple feet were jumping off, so I left it.

Today I tried fixing it by laying my rooster tail on the carpet (it actually hooked in and gave great tension). I walked back about 20 feet and reeled in under tension. I thought I finally solved it, but when I tried to hook the lure on the rod keeper, about 2 feet of line still jumped off the reel.

Any ideas on how to fully fix this? Should I keep trying to straighten the line with tension and maybe use a warm damp towel to reduce memory, or is this already “good enough” for fluoro?

ChatGPT, which I know isn’t the best source, but I don’t have any fishing friends, said I have too much line on this reel, but I can’t believe that’s the case.

Can you show the other side of the reel? Is the line under the bail arm?

I also just added a longer leader and I also find it to be “jumpy” at times but I can at least keep it under tension. But I’m also a bit new to flouro.

I think a lot of folks may recommend using braid as it has less “memory” with a flouro left but I might be wrong
