Here on the end of the line is a big Mirror Carp. And yes I failed to land it. I was fishing this river for red-horse suckers, and caught 6 of them, but then a herd of decent sized carp showed up.

I haven’t actively fished for carp in about two years, but I need some advice for landing these guys on lighter gear, because they always seem to take the weakest line I have casted out. On 20lb test it’s no issue but lighter gear is always a struggle for me. I’m aware of optimal drag settings and keeping them away from snags, but my biggest issue is getting them close enough so I can reach with my landing net. I had this carp at the shore for 5 minutes but never had the angle to scoop it up, and upon trying to maneuver it, it made a mad run and snapped my line.

How do I ensure I always land the fish regardless of what test pound I’ve got?

  1. Use a big net with a long handle, I would use a carp specific net. Tire them out in open water. If they aren’t ready for the net, you can’t force it. You might have decent luck with a carp specific setup and fish using pop-ups or other baits carp will take but suckers won’t. I fish for buffalo and in my experience, they take pop-ups way less than carp do.
