Keeping shrimp like this would be much harder without the excellent properties aquasoil provides. This tank sits at 5.5 consistently.

5.5 what? pH? No thanks. Prefer 6.5 to 7.

Also, aquasoils don’t consistently lower pH. They are supposed to, but I see a lot of conflicting evidence. If Aquasoils lower pH I want to know the ingredients that do this on the bag. If its ammonium sulfate as I suspect I can just buy ammonium sulfate and add it to my tank.

Assuming some do, and we’ve had plenty of examples where some lower pH via KH neutralization then realize it won’t last. It’s a chemical reaction that will wear off. I would rather set my tank properly vs rely on a mass produced industrial substrate that has a finite reaction.

My shrimp tanks are bare bottom and rapidly over populating with shrimp, and plants. So ‘no’ aquasoil isn’t doing anything magical.

  2. Do you think you could accomplish a low pH like this with a dirted substrate and leaf litter for a soft and acidic black water setup? All my tanks are hard water atm, but ive been thinking about trying to keep Caridina.
