There is a local auction site here in Las Vegas that I used to use before they enshittified their website. Over about 5 months I bought everything you see on the table plus hardscape for over a dozen tanks already running. It was unusual for me to ever have to spend even USD$8 for the largest pieces and it was common to get them for $2-5. So now I have a pretty wild selection of wood to choose from whenever it's time to design a tank. Perhaps there is a local or county auction near you that also has little bidding competition for stuff.
And this doesn't count the dozen nano tanks I bought nor rocks and more.
