1) what are these things? 2) why are they in every old man’s tackle box that i’ve ever looked through? 3) will they work?

1)Those jigs are called “Shad Darts” and are amazing, got 4 of em from my grandfather years ago and ive been addicted ever since. Theyre made for shad(obviously) but are great for many smaller species.
The others are panfish poppers for fly fishing.
2) Because they work

The ones with the eyes painted are foam poppers for bass. They are for fly fishing. They work very well

The second photo looks like some kind of top water popper. They rest loom like weird jig heads. Id say both can still catch 👍

Black Friday deals are out for fly fishing combos. Some decent rigs for entry level and a few are half price.

If it’s in every old man’s tackle box that would imply they work. People who have spent a lifetime buying lures tend to have good tastes.

As everyone has mentioned the jigs are “shad darts”. They have that slanted face so when you pop the rod tip they will jump sideways as well as up and down to be more erratic in the water than a traditional ball style jig head.
