Came home after 3-days from visiting family and found this little guy in my recently set-up tank.
The tank is 3 weeks old and the only life I knew of when I left was plants and snails that hiked in with the plants.
Anyone know where this fish might’ve come from, what species it may be, and if its harmful to the future tank inhabitants (shrimp, pygmy cories, and a honey-gourami)?

I’m pretty new to the hobby, this is my first planted tank, and my first tank in 15 years.
That’s someone’s child, is it a fish, then I guess it is
Little dude is enjoying himself
If that’s a fish fry, I won’t worry, let it grow to see what fish it is
Too young for me to tell, personally. It has an interesting way of moving, though.
I wonder if it could have hatched from a stray egg on some of the plants. I’m so curious to know what it turns out to be!!
Anyway, in a general sense it’s unlikely to be incompatible with cory cats unless it’s something that grows quite large.
As for the gourami and shrimp, those might be incompatible with each other already (depending on the particular gourami). So those issues already exist regardless of this new fish.
I think you should wait and see. 🙂 what a fun mystery.
An egg was on a plant and it hatched. He looks friendly
Your lucky you got a free fish , and as a baby .
Fish fry.
Species ID withdrawn
Sweet, the answers have been very helpful! Looks like I have a cool free mystery fish to look after. Do I needa feed em anything while he grows or should I just leave him be?
Rn all I do is 25% water changes weekly. I have a good substrate and plants are doing well!
Babies are the best!
If you have any fish food, you can grind it to dust and feed it a minuscule amount. If it was an older tank I wouldn’t worry about it, but a new tank makes me wonder what it has available to eat in there. The live plants may provide something though. It won’t eat the plants themselves but it might be able to pick at whatever life is growing on the plants.
Congrats!!
Enjoy your new miniscule…. this adds adventure to your tank!
