I need help.
I am a school teacher and I was gifted a betta fish from students. I wasn’t prepared for this at all, as it was not something I have asked for.
I have explained to the children now why it’s important to never get a pet for someone with knowing if they are prepared for it or not.
But it meant I didn’t have time to cycle a tank or anything, I’m just having to do the best I can with what I have got. It’s water hot enough, I have also since bought fake plants and gravel but I have not added them to the tank yet.
Unfortunately the fish is not doing well at all. These pictures show the difference of 3 days.
I have a friend who has an established tank with some shrimp and they have offered to foster the fish while I get another tank properly set up for the fish, but I don’t know if this would cause even more stress for the fish with the move etc.
I know the fish is in a sorry state and I would never have gotten myself a fish this underprepared but I am just looking for advice on how the best way to go forward is.
Please help, I feel terrible for this little guy.

Oh man. Please read up on fish in cycling ASAP. You’ll need to do a partial water change soon because he’s being poisoned by his own poop right now.
