hi all, a few months ago I inherited a setup with mostly barbs, some corys, an otocat, and a small pleco. I’ve been working off and on planting and scaling the tank since.

sadly the “showy” barbs were older and passed away recently (though my Odessa was an asshole who bullied everyone in the tank and I’m not devastated) and I’m looking to shift gears as I’m not a huge fan of the remaining barbs, nor are there enough of any one species left to form proper schools.

I would love to have a betta but I don’t know if my tank would be too tall for one. It’s a 30 gallon half moon and there’s lots of driftwood, plants, and resting/hiding spots.

I like the bottom dwellers and want to keep them. I would likely also add some peaceful schoolers – I’ve seen some suggestions but any recommendations?

If not a betta – any suggestions for a “centerpiece” fish, if at all?

Thanks!

  1. For bettas you want long and shallow tanks so they can get to the top easy. I feel like a betta in this needs to work too hard for air

  2. Female betta or plaket male will do fine in a tall tank, I have kept many bettas in my 29 who were female or plaket, they make use of bottom and top, just make sure the water is very oxygenated, so they don’t feel the need to surface as much.

If there’s lots of resting spots and you avoid any Bettas with long flowy tails it will be fine. I have a Plakat in a 50cm (19.6”) deep community and it thrives.
