Soon to be first-time Betta owner here! The tank is cycling and I have everything in there except for the plants, which I'm getting on Sunday. But I'm concerned about the filter. Is this too much movement? It's an aquarium sponge filter and Uniclife UL40 Air Pump. Thank you!

  1. BoringJuiceBox on

Sponge filters are usually perfect for bettas as the created flow isn’t super strong. I’m glad you are getting plants they will like tall ones to hide behind, I’d also recommend a betta specific hidey that suctions near the surface! Does the sunken ship have holes in it? I might remove it since I worry a betta may hurt themselves on it especially if they try to go through the holes. So far looks great though!

  2. Not too much. Sponge filters agitate the surface, like you’re seeing here, but it’s not creating enough flow where a betta should have trouble

EDIT: I’d be a little worried about that ship with holes being a potential hazard

  3. Looks like a perfectly good sponge filter to me! As others have stated, it does indeed only create an up-flow just above the outlet that helps agitate the surface. Some bettas like mine also love to play around in that jet.

Something I personally love to do to quiet the bubbling sound and make the outflow’s force less powerful but equally effective, is to modify it by adding an air-stone within the body of the sponge filter.
