The tank is 4.5 US Gallons, it’s about 10.5×10.5 and rimless. I have a light and modified filter but no heater yet. Any suggestions?

  1. Shrimps, snails, a very small number of nano fish. Perhaps a betta.

    Definitely not that power bar.

  2. Shrimp, small snails. Plenty of people would put a betta in this, but it’s not ideal IMO, either the shape or the size. Wouldn’t be terrible, but I wouldn’t do it. You’d also have to watch to make sure the water flow from the filter isn’t too strong. I use sponge filters with bettas so the flow is gentle

5 gallon is minimum for betta but I’m sure this would work fine with a long fin, assuming you have PLENTY of plants to help stabilize the water. Or else probably shrimp. Not a lot of options for under 10 gallons

I would go with shrimps. While 4.5 gallons would be good for a betta, it will be less water volume than that once you get substrate, decor, and plants in there! You should consider picking a shrimp color you like and just starting a colony of them in there, and once they start having babies you can move the babies into your tanks for cleanup crew support! Or if you have any large predatory fish, you could use the colony’s offspring as an extra food source for them. I have a 5 gallon set up to breed neocaridina shrimp and scuds in, and I use them to feed my bettas (as a part of a varied diet, don’t worry I don’t feed my bettas only shrimp/scuds). Free(ish) food!

  5. Minimum for bettas is usually 5gal, BUT I think this would be just fine for a long finned betta! Heavily planted with places to rest and explore!

  6. I agree shrimps snails and betta but i have a very established 5.5 gallon with a shit ton of plants that has a small school of chilli rasboras in it

  7. im setting up an almost identical tank today, in fact two of them haha. theyre going to be shrimp tanks!

shrimp tanks are so enjoyable. im actually doing 1 neocaridina and 1 caridina tank that will be side by side.

Shrimp or snails, there ain’t many choices for a 4.5 gal, if it was a 5 gal you could’ve had a betta
