So I have an around 7 week bettafish,, for context I was given her by my moms coworkers daughter who bred them

But i just put my finger in the tank (trying to get him/her used to me) and he flared,, never done this before but like gills OUT like huge flare

soo does this mean hes a boy?
Also is there any extra care for males other than exercisisjg them by flaring?

  1. Theres no point to “exercise them” by getting them to flare. Its just unnecessary stress . Have a 5 gallon minimum and plenty of plants and resting spots. They will be a okay

I agree that flaring is not exercise but unnecessary stress. Plenty of plants, resting spots close to the surface and places to hide. Stress causes all kinds of illnesses.

Flaring is done by both sexes but yours looks male to me because of the long skirt. Not much extra care tbh, fin length is the only reason why you’d need special care— Super long finned betta fish, like halfmoon dumbo ear kind of length, would need resting spots close to the surface of the tank because of the drag of their fins.

Your fish has short fins, so it should be more active than one of those fluttery kinds of betta fish. Resting spots would still be nice, but don’t expect him to use them, lol.
