Hello from Thailand!
This is my new Betta smaragdina ‘guitar tail’ tank. It’s a 4 gallon, no filter, dirt with gravel cap tank (I heard about this Walstad method, so I tried it out). The tank has been going for a month and the plants are doing quite well. Have been checking parameters often and controlling temp through a mini fan to help cooling down the water on hot days.
The betta just arrived last week and so far he’s doing fine, coloring up nicely and eating normally. I also have 3 striped trapdoor snails in there but I couldn’t find them today, so no pictures. I used to have a whisker shrimp in there too. It was the former inhabitant along with the snails before the fish came. However, the betta terrorized it quite severely, and the shrimp lost a bit of its antennas, so I have since moved it out to my backyard pond.
The betta, thinking about calling him ‘Tarzan’, is actually my first betta fish to live in a well planted tank with some space. My late bettas I had a long time ago as kid were kept in jars (like how most bettas are kept here)… Which you can probably guess, they didn’t last long, so I am trying to do it right this time.
He is still quite small and shy, mostly hide and forage in the shadow, but will pop out to take some bites on Hikari Vibra Bites. He also love to hunt the detritus worms and will probably decimate their entire population soon lol. He has his little bubble nest in the dark corner behind all the branches and plants (he really loves his privacy…).
