We rescued this tank and its inhabitants from a teen who could care less about it. The water had evaporated over months and only a few fish and shrimp survived. They’re in a bucket with a heater and an air pump btw. I could not believe the fish were alive due to how dark brown the water was and how obviously neglected the tank had been despite the hundreds put into it with all the beautiful natural plants. Honestly it looked like it hadn’t gotten a water change since last year, due to how much water had evaporated.

Sorry for the rant, just so upset and frustrated at how neglected these creatures were.

The paper towels are soaked in cleaning distilled white vinegar and after being there for a while still refuse to budge with a glass aquarium sponge. How do I get rid of them??? I believe the tank is glass.

  1. Nice save on that setup, those animals really lucked out with you. For the tank, if plain vinegar and elbow grease are not touching it, it is probably thick mineral scale and organics baked on. Try working in stages. Razor blade scraper at a shallow angle to pop off the worst chunks, then repeated soaks with vinegar or citric acid and more scraping, and only after that hit it with something a bit stronger like Bar Keepers Friend or a similar powdered cleaner, keeping it on the glass only and away from any plastic seals. Rinse like crazy when you are done and do a full fill and dump before anyone moves back in.
