So my friend got a betta and realized they’re “boring”. And I usually rescue all my animals no matter what size, but I’ve never really had a fish. I mean I’ve had the big eyed gold fish in my house before but they weren’t mine and I hear betta are more complex. So she gave him to me. I recently got him a water heater but idk if the pebbles are a good thing? She gave me the tank and this is her previous set up. Anything tips or tricks that can help this little guy would be greatly appreciated. Also is he supposed to be this dark? I think he’s a paradise something. He really like blood worms, is that supposed to just be a treat? Cause he won’t eat regular pebbles. Again any help would be greatly appreciated!

It would appear you have at least the minimum things for him. Make sure your heater is within 76-80 range and it stays consistent, I have mines set to 78.
he’d probably appreciate some more hard scape places to hide etc.

Most bettas like resting spots close to the surface as they have a labyrinth organ which means they can breathe air from the surface. Some people buy whats called a betta leaf bed, it’s basically just a plastic leaf that has a suction cup and you stick it to the side of the tank closeish to the surface. They are cheap but they can be a bit hit or a miss in terms of if they like it or not. I bought one for mine but he’s not a fan.
I have quite a heavily planted tank and he prefers to lay and rest on some large Amazon sword leaves near the surface.

As for food, yes bloodworms should be used as a treat once a week at the weekend maybe, but not part of a daily diet, mainly because they are too rich/high in protein and they also lack full nutrients, too much blood worm can also cause problems like constipation. High quality pellets are most people’s go to when it comes to Bettas. If you have pellets and he’s not eating them, you could try flake food. I’d consider not feeding him for a day or two, then soak the pellets in some tank water for a few minutes before giving him them.

Other things you may want to consider are, are you doing weekly water changes or will you be? Are you testing water parameters?
Anything else or any concerns you might have do ask!

Beautiful fish tho, nothing wrong with his colour!
I wish you the best of luck with your new pet!
