I'm going to build a rod carrier to attach to my roof rack, and I'm hoping to find some leads on box materials.

I'm planning on using the basic "PVC pipes attached to tool box" approach like this, but I'm struggling to find a box that will work for my specifications. I have a 9' 6" spinning rod I want to transport in addition to my fly rods, so I need extra space in the box to accommodate the spinning reel being much farther forward on the handle. Specifically, I'm looking for a box that is 20" tall. The closest I can find is are ammo boxes like this, but they're made of metal, which will be difficult for me to cut holes in for the PVC pipes.

Any recommendations on potential design options for a combo fly/spinner rod carrier?

  1. Just one spinning reel? Drill a hole
In the lid and let the handle stick out? Kind of silly sounding but I’m sure some type of gasket could go around it.
