So I was gifted this 2.5(?) gal tank and put a betta in it from my LFS as well as some snails from my home tank and plants. I read the minimum for them is 5 gal but it is heavily planted. I have a nearly-empty 10 gal at home that has 1-2 of my old khuli loach colony left as well as plants and snails, though not as heavily planted as this I can put some more of this grass in there. I also have a 46 gallon bowfront that has no plants yet (previously housed an electric blue crayfish that ate them all but has the substrate to be planted), a Peruvian snail, a 6" pleco I plan to rehome ASAP (sold to me as something totally different that would "stay 1.5 inches"), 2 leftover blacklight neon tetras from an old school, and 1 guppy.

My betta is currently hiding in his hobbit hole in the middle so he isn't pictured. He has a heater and filter. There is duckweed covering the surface as well as snails.

Questions:
1. Is this okay?
2. If not, should I cut the plants back or move him to the 10 gallon? If I do I realize I'll probably have to move the khulis to the 46gal.
3. What the heck else should I put in the 2.5? Shrimp?

Thanks!

  1. The plants aren’t a problem, heavily planted is good, but it is too small. I’d only put shrimp and small snails like mini ramshorns in a 2.5 gallon. Move the betta to the 10

Long fin betta will be fine in a planted 2.5 if it’s got a filter and heater. Just do weekly water changes like 0.5-1 gallon each

  3. I think he will be better off long term in a 10 gallon! He will be more entertaining to watch swim around and explore the larger space as well if you have an empty tank for him.
