Hey y’all!
I am possibly going to rescue a friends betta fish since she is moving, but I’m not sure if my community tank will be too overstocked with the betta.
I have a 20 gallon long with a 40 gal sponge filter. I have 6 panda corydoras, 9 rummynose tetras, 2 mystery snails, and about 10 neocardina shrim. My tank is heavily planted. If it’s not too overstocked, and I could add him, what’s the best way to go about adding him to my community?

  1. I would love to say yes, but rummynose tetras are really bad tankmates for bettas. They are very active, big and nippy, and their presence and just doing their own thing can be too much for a betta. Especially during a feeding frenzy! I really wouldn’t keep them together.

  2. Your tank it beautiful, and in my opinion there’s a good chance that adding the betta will be perfectly fine. If it’s a long-fin type, he’ll be a slow swimmer and the rummynose will have no issue staying out of his way. If he’s a shortfin he might be more likely to charge them, but if you add in some vertical obstructions (maybe some fine twigs, complimenting your beautiful scape) they’ll have places they can duck away from him.

Since the betta is being added after everyone else has been established, the fish and shrimp will be part of his new territory, as long as he’s not a particularly cranky individual. In my experience, bettas don’t really care about other kinds of fish, they just don’t like their own kind.
