We've always suspected he's had a tumor in his side as his side has seemed especially swollen, and it seems to be more common in blue bettas. I can't tell if his fins are showing signs of fin rot. That's the first thing I always look for.
He has seemed to want to stay around the heater. I am wondering if he needs more plants or hiding spaces. He has natural looking decorations but minimal plants. I think if we do get plants for this tank they'll have to be low maintenence.

swelling may be inflammed swim bladders which is somewhat common in longfins. his fins are fraying too, maybe from stress, physical damage or bacteria. he definitely needs some floating anubias and lots of other plants. bettas do get sad and stressed when they don’t have their hidey holes and secret lairs. so add lotsa plants, maybe epiphytes like anubias or bucephalandra
