my kid got a fishing advent calendar this year and he pulled this out of one of the slots yesterday and I'm not sure what it is. When I squeeze it, the hook thing retracts into the plastic.

It works best for when the hook is deep, I’ve had good success unhooking some gut-hooked trout with it without causing much trauma and I don’t think pliers would’ve done the job!
