Found these guys in a high lake in western wa. Curious why all of them were so dark? Diet? Water quality? Cool bunch to find nonetheless!

I have seen lots of rainbows, brookies, Golden trout, that take on quite dark coloring like that where they have a lot of shade and dark bottom. I’m not honestly sure if it is genetic selection, or if it’s some other factor that makes individuals darken.

I’ve often fished in darker water or areas with large log jams. The fish are often darker.
Not far from these spots, on rivers, fish become brighter where the water is open and flowing.

They’re like that because of the way they are. You can tell by the way they look.
