My father had a heart attack that left him in a vegetative state a few months ago. He had an aquarium as a hobby but he was the only one who knew anything about it really. We've just been feeding the fish and everything seemed to be working fine the past few months until this happened. The fish are safe but I'm worried that this was something important for the maintenance of the tank.

I’m really sorry about your dad, man.
I’m assuming this was inside the tank? My first guess is that it’s a heater.
ETA – if you can post a photo of the whole tank people here might be able to give you some helpful tips for its upkeep etc.

those springs/coils suggest it was a heater, i think..
