So I've had this tank for a couple of years now and just last week I lost all my snails and my male betta to a bacterial infection. I still have to desinfect and recycle so my tank is a bit messy because I haven't taken care of it since I lost the betta. I'm looking to get an air stone to help clean the substrate more, and also maybe a couple more plants. This is a 8gal (30L) btw.

What would you suggest for the next stock?
I've thought of changing it up a bit and maybe getting a female betta, or even a different species, maybe endlers.

Idk if there's anything else that I could put in it?

I do love mystery snails and definitely would like to have at least one.

I've considered trying shrimp, but from my research it's not a good idea with the betta (shrimp are also so expensive here, so Idk if I could afford more than 4-5 right away)

I also definitely intend to keep indian almond leaves and the colored water, I just love it sm!

  1. I’m sorry about your betta and snails, that’s really rough. Don’t worry about the “messy” tank though, just let it cycle and recover.

For an 8-gallon, Endlers (males only to avoid babies) are awesome because they’re active, colorful, and super peaceful with Mystery Snails, or you could do a school of Chili Rasboras for a chill, low-bioload vibe with plants.

If you want shrimp later, they pair much better with those nano fish than a betta (who might eat them), and an air stone is great for circulation but won’t really “clean” the substrate, only your siphon and good flow can do that.
