This is Chuck, my Red Dragon Betta. I have a question about covering betta tanks. I have two 7g cubes, both open tops. Chuck lives in the one and the other is Duke's domain. Twice a week they get bloodworms which they like to jump for. Sidenote: I discovered this accidentally when Chuck jumped out of the water with excitment one day, I'm not training them to jump. I've gotten to know these fish pretty well and I really don't think I need lids on these cubes… am I wrong?

  1. You may be right, they may not jump out. But on the flip side, there is a chance you are wrong, and your fish could jump out.

For me personally, it just wouldn’t be worth the risk and I would put a lid on them.

  2. You could add some floating plants with a feeding ring. Not sure if they’d try but the surface carpet might make jumping out unfeasible.

I thought my betta was the only who did this but I noticed this one day when I went to feed it. It was looking at me while i was walking to the tank and once I open the top to put food in, it jumped out a little bit and has done it a few times already.
