My aquarium is located right next to the heater, which is always on, and the room temperature is about 23 °C. I am wondering whether the water temperature is warm enough for my betta. He often stays among the floating plants near the water surface. Could this behavior mean that he is feeling too cold and therefore stays as high up in the aquarium as possible, since there is a lamp above the aquarium that may be giving off heat?

  1. Not really, bettas are like that naturally. They like sitting on higher leaves close to the surface when comfortable so they have easy access to air instead of having to swim up all the time. Good to keep in mind since I don’t see a filter or bubbler

Too cold for your fish, you will need an aquarium heater. Water will always be slightly cooler than the room it’s in and 23C is not even high enough for your betta to thrive as they are tropical fish and require between 76-82 F, withe the ideal temp being 78-80 F. There are cheap pre-set aquarium heaters on Amazon or heaters you can adjust yourself for a few dollars more.

As for health, without knowing anything else about your feeding schedule/ feed type, tank parameters, etc, it’s hard to tell just from a couple pictures. However his fins look in good shape, and although his swim bladder is slightly protruding that’s normally nothing to worry about.

Thank you for your response. I feed him twice a day with daphnia and bloodworms. The water parameters are as they should be, and I will get a heater.
